As a wheel company it is only natural that we get some questions pertaining to tires. We do not always feel 100% comfortable answering questions about tires since we only make wheels so we decided to get the experts to join us on this collaborated video to help us out. Cameron Parsons of Toyo Tires helps us answer the most frequently asked questions regarding choosing track tires.
Question #1: How would a complete novice go about choosing a track tire?
Cameron’s Answer: Don’t overspend, don’t go for the super performance oriented option. Focus on getting seat time and the essentials such as load and speed ratings. Make sure they are properly inflated.
Question #2: Does treadwear count affect my choice for specific motorsports?
Cameron’s Answer: You may not have to focus so hard on UTQG or treadwear but you should shop by category ie. extreme summer performance. Be sure to check the regulations of the series you plan to drive in to ensure your tires falls within approved spec.
Question #3: Will the overall height of my wheel and tire package affect my performance on track?
Cameron’s Answer: Keep in mind unsprung and rotational mass and it’s impact on your suspension and drivetrain. Try not to use to large or heavy wheel and tire combination. Be aware of your sidewall profile. Going up in wheel diameter means sacrificing sidewall profile to allow for grip, comfort and durability.
Question #4: Should I expect a change in tire pressure when on track?
Cameron’s Answer: Yes you can expect change in tire pressure but it may not be a huge gain. You should note your starting tire pressure and the pressure once you get off track by using a pyrometer. If you are doing a motorsport such as endurance racing you may experience higher temperature gains due to the longevity of time on track.
Question #5: How does Toyo develop tires for specific racing series?
Cameron’s Answer: Toyo performances in-house testing but also performs field testing by consulting with organizations and their racers. Collecting this data and feedback allows for Toyo to develop a tire that works for the everyday weekend warriors to professional drivers and teams.
