Konig Ultragrams: A Solution to the Tire Shortage Crisis

Intro

In the realm of motorsport, unexpected challenges can often arise. One such hurdle was faced by racers participating in the Lucky Dog Racing League earlier this year. The shortage of Hankook Ventus R-S4 tires, a mandatory spec tire for the league, caused significant disruption for many teams. However, a solution emerged, thanks to the versatility and performance of Konig Ultragram wheels.

The Tire Shortage Crisis

The Hankook factory fire, which delayed the shipment of certain R-S4 sizes to the United States, created a dilemma for racers who had built their cars around specific tire dimensions. For teams that had invested in 15×10-inch wheels and 245/40R15 tires, finding suitable alternatives was a pressing concern.

Konig Ultragrams to the Rescue

In the face of this crisis, Konig Ultragram wheels proved to be a valuable solution. These flow-formed wheels, known for their low weight, reasonable cost, and excellent brake clearance, offered a viable alternative to the unavailable tires.

The Benefits of Konig Ultragrams

  • Versatility: The Konig Ultragrams could accommodate narrower tires, such as the 225/45R15, making them a suitable option for teams that needed to adjust their wheel and tire setup.
  • Performance: Despite the change in tire size, the Konig Ultragrams maintained their performance characteristics. Their low weight contributed to improved handling and acceleration, while their excellent brake clearance ensured ample stopping power.
  • Cost-Effective: The Ultragrams offered a cost-effective solution, especially considering the potential financial implications of the tire shortage.

A Case Study: The LFX-Swapped Miata

A perfect example of how Konig Ultragrams helped a team overcome the tire shortage is the LFX-swapped Miata. By downsizing to 15×9-inch Ultragrams, the team was able to successfully install the 225/45R15 tires and prepare their car for the next race. This case study demonstrates the adaptability and effectiveness of these wheels in challenging circumstances.

Conclusion

The tire shortage crisis highlighted the importance of having versatile and reliable equipment in the world of motorsport. Konig Ultragram wheels proved to be a valuable asset for teams that faced this challenge. Their performance, versatility, and cost-effectiveness make them a strong choice for racers seeking to optimize their setups and overcome unexpected obstacles. The Best Wheels For GR86, BRZ, FRS?

There is always going to be someone out there asking why we don’t make their desired fitment. Our response remains the same. For what car? Well you guys have answered and your answers have been heard with this one. “We want wider sizes in 5×100.”

The Ultragram is our newest flow formed wheel and will be offered in an exclusive GR86, BRZ, FRS track spec of 17×10A et48 5×100 weighing in at about 18.95 lbs per wheel.

You may be thinking, why no B profile? We wanted to make sure that we took into account big brakes like the OE Brembos on the BRZ performance package or any other big brake kits that owners may equip their car with so we can optimize the brake clearance of this wheel. The result of that is sacrificing some of the concavity of the B profile and ensuring that this wheel has a ton of brake clearance in it’s A profile form.

This spec will be offered in our brand new Carbon Bronze Metallic finish which is unique to the Ultragram. The color sits somewhere in the middle between a gunmetal-ish and bronze and is quite stunning in the metallic finish. (Titanium Metallic is not available in this spec.)

Where can you buy this? Great question. Vision Speedworks is currently the only stocking dealer of this spec and the first batch sold out almost instantly. Head on over to their website to place a pre-order/back order and make sure you don’t lose your place in line!
